Studio Update No. 2 | March 2025

March 17, 2025

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Doesn’t it feel like Christmas was yesterday??

I’m bringing back studio updates! Woot woot. The last one I did was 3+ years ago and it’s fun to see what’s changed and what’s the same. Something I’m working on now is bringing animation into my personal work and it’s been so much fun.

The Carefree Gardener Lady, 2025. Oh how I’d love to be as free as her and never have to shut the curtains.

Current Projects

Right now I’m focused on building up my editorial portfolio. I’d love to get hired for this kind of work and they say to make the kind of work you want to get hired for so here I go! I’m loving Lilla Roger’s Make Art that Sells Editorial class. Here are some of my assignments so far:

For the article “The Morning Routines of Highly Successful Women”

For the article “Veganism and Trees Could Help Stop Global Warming”

Spots for the article “Veganism and Trees Could Help Stop Global Warming”

I’m also cooking up a Severance illustration cause that show is seriously incredible and I dig the culture section of The New York Times. (EEP did I just say a dream client name of mine out loud?)

Sketchbook

I’ll never get tired of drawing flowers 💛

Stuff that’s inspiring me lately

I’ve been doing a ton of research on editorial illustration and therefore have come across some amazing illustrators all over the internet. Here are some of my favorites:

LUCIA VINTI

I absolutely love all the texture and hand-drawn goodness in Lucia’s work!

LORETA ISAC

Loreta’s animations are seriously mindblowing

HANNAH WARREN

Hannah’s illustrations are so fun and charming!

Reading/Watching/Listening

  • Recently finished: Kindred by Octavia Butler - 5/5 🌟

    • This book was great! It’s about a Black woman who mysteriously time travels back to the slave-era Antebellum South and having to deal with all of that.

  • Currently Reading:

    • Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune - This is the sequel to The House in the Cerulean Sea by Klune. I loved the first one, it has a great cast of quirky characters that are so endearing and it just feels like a big gay hug. Hopefully the second one is just as good.

  • My husband and I are finally watching Severance, we waited until all the episodes were stacked up haha. This show blows my mind at how much they can pack into just 9-10 episodes! We went to watch season 2 and watched a Youtube recap of season 1 and remembered almost none of the plot so we started over with season 1 and it did not disappoint. I love forgetting shows and getting to re-experience them all over again.

  • I’m deep in podcast mode right now. Andy J. Pizza’s recent episode, , 7 Steps I’d Take If I Was Starting My Creative Practice from Scratch, gave me a fresh dose of motivation.

That’s all folks! I’d love to hear from you – what are you reading/watching/listening to right now? Hit reply or send me a DM on Instagram. 😊✌️

Xoxo,

Lindsey

    Animation

Have you ever been intimidated by animation or wondered how other animators do their thing? Animation can feel overwhelming, especially for illustrators who are new to it.

When I was starting out as an motion designer, I would try to do After Effects tutorials on Youtube but would quickly give up because the interface was confusing or I couldn’t follow along. And later on, once I got something to move, it often looked clunky or weird or possessed and I didn’t know how to fix it. Boo.

Here’s maybe why animation feels difficult, and how to make the process easier.

As an illustrator, you’re probably great at creating cool artwork. But one way to take your work to the next level is by adding animation.

I’m not talking about a feature length Disney movie here – just little tweaks in Procreate or After Effects can go a long way. The cool thing is that animation isn’t just a fun skill – it’s a game-changer for standing out, attracting clients, and increasing income.

This post will explore why illustrators should learn animation and how it can open exciting new career opportunities for you!

HI! I decided to start writing more stuff down cause it seems fun and my 60 year old self will probably thank me for it. Although I aspire to do these once a month, if I'm being realistic, they'll probably be more sporadic. And that's ok I guess!

I’m really excited to share a bit more about my art practice, what’s in my sketchbook, things that inspired me that I thought you might like, and other books & food & things to bring a little joy or inspiration or delight to your corner of the internet.
