If you spend a lot of time drawing like I do, you probably love getting words delivered into your head while you work. Audiobooks and podcasts are my favorite thing to listen to during those stretches of time. Here are eight of my favorites that have made a huge difference in my creative practice:
1. Creative Pep Talk
Andy J. Pizza has the BEST creativity podcast out there. If I had to choose just one, this would be it. He shares advice and interviews with other creative people about growing a thriving creative practice. Check out this recent episode that’s a favorite of mine, 7 Steps I’d Take If I Was Starting My Creative Practice from Scratch.
2. Thoughts on Illustration
Tom Froese is one of my favorite teachers on Skillshare, so I was delighted when he decided to start a podcast. He gives a lot of practical advice on both the creative and business side of illustration. I really liked his recent episode How I Found My First Agent and Editorial Clients.
3. The Bossbabe Podcast
If you haven’t heard of Bossbabe, check out her IG right now! She shares golden nuggets of wisdom all the time. Her podcast is great for people who want to learn about online marketing and stay motivated in their business. I recommend her interview with Seth Godin, 428: Leveraging Real Marketing Strategy Means You’ll Never Have to Sell Again: Here’s How with Seth Godin.
4. Boss Reponses
Boss Responses is made by a freelance writer, but her advice and wisdom on freelancing in general is so great. She recently had Jamie Brindle on the show, who I follow for his freelancing wisdom as well. Check out #61: Shifting from One-Time Gigs to Repeat Clients with Jamie Brindle.
5. Proof to Product
For anyone who sells physical products, Proof to Product is the best. Katie covers everything from online marketing to sustainable growth to growing a team and much, much more. I loved her episode with Katie of The Good Twin on trendsetting, sticking to your core values, and the importance of slow and sustainable growth.
6. Windowsill Chats
Ah, Windowsill Chats 🥲 I love this one so much. Margo is a shining light in the illustration world and I eat up anything she says or produces. Her episode with Megan Auman was so good: How to Break the Cycle of Overthinking and Start Creating Your Best Work.
7. Design Matters with Debbie Millman
Debbie Millman is one of the OG creativity podcasters. Her accolades really add up – her writing and illustrations have appeared in many major publications, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, New York Magazine, The Baffler, and Fast Company and more. Her artwork has been included in many museums and institutes and she’s the co-founder of the Master in Branding program at the School of Visual Arts in NYC! Anyhoo. She’s interviewed hundreds of seriously cool creative people on her podcast and I love eavesdropping on their conversations. Check out her interview with Lisa Congdon, one of my favorite illustrators.
8. The Goal Digger by jenna kutcher
Lastly, I couldn’t include a podcast roundup without mentioning Jenna Kutcher’s podcast. She’s also a great follow in Instagram. I love her approach to online business and her podcast always pumps me up. Check out Episode 478: What You ACTUALLY Need to Do Before Leaving Your 9 to 5 if you want to feel super inspired and scared shitless at the same time (but, like, in a good way).
